WHAT HAVE WE BECOME

Twenty-three years after the first People Power Revolution, what have we become? I need not cite the answers for which, as all we have to do is look around and see whether we have been true to our commitment to the promises we made in EDSA.

Today, as we lay down to rest a former President, let us reflect on the times when we have been complacent, when we have become dishonest ourselves, when we have become passive, conniving, lazy and all things negative. When all the emotions have died down, do we return to our old ways and wait until another person like CORY dies to remind us that we have not been doing enough for our country? If this is so, I tell you, we will be disappointed. Because with the way things are going, with the way we are acting, there will never be another CORY. There will never be another NINOY. We have been injected with their spirits, their heroism and inspiration and all these should have been into our system from the very start. But if we remain seasonal heroes, if we only inspire ourselves for a few days and then succumb to the mediocrity that will kill our nation even more, then CORY and NINOY lived and died without worth.

Let us reflect and put our positive thoughts into action for if we do, everyday when each one of us die, expect everyone to line in the streets and chant our names like we did for CORY and NINOY. Only then that we can proudly say that the Philippines is a country where heroes are born everyday.
